1st DENTON BB - NATIONAL CHESS COMPETITION
The chess team is Tom, Anthony and Ben. We won our first round match 8-1 (7 wins and 2 draws). That took us through to the next round of the tournament. We next have to play 35th Liverpool to get through to the third round of the tournament. The third round game will be away.
The round 2 game at 35th Liverpool took place just before Christmas - and again we won. This takes us through to round 3 which will be against 7th Grimsby in the North East. So we have to travel a bit further for this match.
We had to get up early on Saturday 12th January, because our round three match meant we had to travel all the way up to Grimsby in the North East. It was worth it though, and although the competition was a bit tougher in this round, we managed to succeed with a 5-4 victory. Take a look at the action photographs in the gallery below!! This means we are now down to the last 8 companies in the competition. Fortunately, the next round will be at home, but we don't know who are opponents will be yet. Check back soon to find out how we get on.
Our opponents for Round 4 were 7th Southport. The original date had to be postpones on the morning of the competition as two members of the opposition were unwell. So the match took place on Friday 1st Feb, at Hope Church. It was another nail biter with the final result coming down to the last two games. In the end we were victorious once again, with a 5-4 win.
Believe it or not, even though this is our first time in the competition we are now through to the Semi-Final - the last 4 teams in England & Wales.
Saturday 23rd February saw the team set off on a long trip to 32nd Nottingham, where sadly our chess dream for 2008 came to an end. Against tough competition the team were only able to win 1 of the 9 games. Our progress this far, though, was more than we expected, so we will be back with even more determination next year!
